Here’s my most underwhelming bottle in a long time, from Champagne: Bouchard Lieu-dit Chardonnay, Roses de Jeanne Lieu-dit La Haute-Lemblée. (Deg 2022) It’s generous, quite big on the nose and palate, with ripe, broad-shouldered fruit and a tiny touch of herbal sweetness, lovely overall. It doesn’t seek attention; it’s a good, solid Champagne. It lacks the tension and pressure of its brother UR/R18, which even as a Blanc de Noir showed more chalky, salty minerality than this Chardonnay. Punchy expression, heavy concentration.
