I’ve ordered a Rose from Arena. My effort for this particular wine ended, all the time, in disappointment. A few said, rosé is not a real wine, so they don’t sell it. Finally, several Corsican resellers admitted that they had never heard of the rosés from this producer. But you can buy it in States. Not surprised? I’ve ordered a rose from Domaine Gentile instead. 100% Nielluciu. Compared to the ones from Cap Corse, it has bigger body. A serious wine. Not the most popular producer from the island, but do try to get their wines, especially the dessert wines! We made an appointment by email at Yves Leccia. (You don’t need to make an appointment at their relative, Domaine Leccia.) The reds are complex and age-worthy wines. Uva from Marfisi is another red to discover. It’s a blend of three Corsican grapes, has power and spiciness of Niellucciu on the nose. Myrtle scent… It smells like mountains. The best tasting took place at Culombu. Well above average wines. I Sgio (red) comes from Granit soils and made from 6 different grapes. Its nose probably will take most people to Italy. What a delicate wine! E Signore is another white, without AOP-Label but lots of character. Vermentinu is accompanied by 6 different grapes. You can get a “bite” from this one. It’s a structure-wine and aroma enters the game later. The “Storia “ wines from this Clos are dedicated to the grapes of Corsica which are one step behind Niellucciu, Vermentinu or Sciaccarellu and they are all worth to taste! Arena’s Morta Maio (2013) is a proof that how well a Corsican red ages. It’s tannins are still somewhat distinct. I can’t help myself but compare this wine to a Pinot. The only tasting that bothered me in this region was at Domaine Montemagni. Their roses are fine but the others lacked concentration and extract. Looking back, Patrimonio, with its 39 winemakers, is a good place to find complex reds with character. Roses are anything but boring here. Almost all producers make bio-dynamic wines. Although it’s not directly related to this point, I must add: No chance to find a bad wine in Patrimonio, even at a village bar. #corsicanwine #patrimonio #winesofinstagram #winegram #corse
