There’s something remarkable about this new era of Nebbiolo, how such a traditional region has embraced fresh perspectives while the legends of both traditionalists and modernists still walk among the vineyards. One producer reshaping Nebbiolo’s face is Cascina Fontana. If you think the grape’s bold strength is too much for true elegance… After a sip of their Barolo, I’m tempted to feature it in my hypothetical Barolo 101 class. For years, I’ve resisted Barolos, they’re often heavier and harder to approach than Barbarescos. But these are elegant wines. Langhe Nebbiolo 2023 feels effortless, nothing heavy, nothing tiring. Open and fresh, not lightweight but vibrant. These young Nebbiolos carry an easygoing charm that almost sounds like an oxymoron: already drinkable, charming… But it is. Pretty with hints of strawberries and fine, slim-fit tannins. Barolo 2021 speaks with more gravity yet lighter than most. Grapes from each vineyard are harvested and vinified separately, then blended post-fermentation and aged two years in neutral, large Slavonian botti, no harsh structure, no rusticity, no heaviness. Great acidity, true to its origin, a nuanced wine with a friendlier face than most peers. #winegram #winediary #barolo
