3 Burgundians, may be you think it’s oxymoron. Well… The soil and soul of Baden and Burgundy share some similarities, and forgive me Demeter, but Makalie delivers more Burgundian character than many Burgundy domaines. This nose of whole bunch, this crystal clarity of fruit and delicate floral lift, fills your mouth like a spring meadow. Many producers would dream of this! 12% alcohol, a hot year, yet this is only Makalie’s entry-level wine. It’s energetic, spicy on the finish, with a sweet core that makes it so charming. It’s not an intellectual wine, but who cares at this point? Very attractive, without being loud. Again in Baden: 2022 Muschelkalk from Enderle & Moll. I’ve heard there are some hit-or-miss bottles around and luckily, this one’s a hit. (The Pinot vines date back to the 1950s, from a single vineyard. We don’t take people seriously who still think Pinot Noir is an oxymoron in Germany, right?) Starts elegantly , the fruit laid-back at first, then comes that animalic and earthy touch. The body is fine, confident, perfectly balanced. The fine tannic structure shows top-notch winemaking. Another hot year, another well-made German Pinot. Philine Isabelle’s 2022 Chardonnay is nothing like I remember from her beautifully balanced 2021 bottle, that one had perfect acidity and harmony. It was an interesting bottle for sure. The 2022 is very fruit-forward and open, but it’s missing that certain something to make it truly impressive. Medium length, pleasant to drink, but nothing interesting. Lack of acidity too. Too sweet, almost tiring fruitiness and sweetness. Maybe it’s just the vintage? And the yogurt nose. Not going away, sticks to the wine for 3 days. It’s okay, I can live with it. I am not looking for another bottle of Chardonnay from Piemonte. And if you think Chardonnay from Langhe is a conversation starter, well I’d rather sit alone. #winediary #badenwine #lowintervention #germanpinotnoir #germanwines #italianwines
