We all agree Furmint deserves more love, right? So, I did my part, voluntarily, in Vienna. 2023 Furmint from Wenzel is clearly a result of serious winemaking, yet it remains a playful wine, full of primary fruit aromas. I’ve tried the older vintages in Germany many times, and I think Wenzel got even better. The nose reveals different kinds of apples with a spicy finish. I bet it’ll become even prettier on the second day or third day. It shows the varietal character of Furmint, with all those herbal notes too. 2022, Furmint Tannenberg from Anita und Hans Nittnaus @n.i.t.t.n.a.u.s, is a salty, powerful showstopper. It opens up easily but it’s hard to catch all the evolution in the glass. From about one hectare vineyard, concentration is high. It’s powerful but not too fat, its structure reminded me a bit of excellent examples of Assyrtiko. Almost oily, big, long, with a mouthwatering acidity. Tannenbergs texture is like a red, so a big part of its character. It’s complex, not the leanest or most elegant kind of white wine, but full of presence, salty minerality, and just enough fruitiness to keep it really attractive at this young age. PS: Less than 500 bottles, get one while you can. #austrianwine #furmint #burgenland #winestudy
